Single Vision lenses provide one power of vision correction throughout the lens. They can be used for distance vision or reading glasses. They can also serve as specialty glasses when made up for specific uses such as computer operators or musicians.
Bifocal lenses provide two different corrective powers in one lens, usually for distance and close-up. The main problem with bifocal lenses is that they do not provide mid-range vision and the visible segment line can cause image jump and blur.
Trifocal lenses provide all three ranges of vision, distance, reading and mid-range. A visible segment line that can cause image jump and blur separates each section.
Progressive lenses have established themselves as the best general multi-focal for most patients, providing a smooth, uninterrupted transition from distance to near viewing. Patients also appreciate the cosmetic appeal of a multi-focal correction with no visible segment lines.
Aspheric lens design improves optics in the peripheral (away from the center) zone. Aspheric front surfaces have gradually flattening curves, provide less bulging and a measurably thinner and lighter lens, which is much more attractive with no comprise of optical performance.
Lens Enhancements
Multi-layer Anti-Reflective (A/R) Coatings chemically coat the lens that eliminate reflections from both surfaces. This allows close to 100 percent of the light to transmit through the lens.
Cosmetic Benefit: Patients look better with A/R coated lenses. Lens reflections distract the observer, eliminating them reveals the expressiveness and beauty of the patient's eyes. People immediately notice when lenses are A/R coated.
Visual Benefit: Patients see better with A/R lenses. Ghost images created by car headlights during night driving are an annoying and sometimes dangerous experience. A/R coatings transmit light otherwise lost from reflection and thus make night driving and many other tasks safer and more comfortable.
Chief Complaint of many Patients: Due to the increase in light transmitted through the lens, dirt, skin oils, and finger prints show up much clearer than would otherwise be hidden by light reflection. This causes the lens to require cleaning more often. Ask one of our opticians about the special cleaning solution and cleaning cloth needed to maintain A/R lenses. Never use paper products to clean lenses, this will only cause scratches!
Scratch-resistant coatings protect plastic lenses with either a silicone or acrylic resin and extends lens life. No coating will stop lenses from scratching! Special care is always needed in maintaining your lenses.
Ultra-Violet Protection: It is well known that the invisible ultra-violet radiation from sunlight can be harmful. Plastic lenses can be processed with special UV filtering chemicals, creating an invisible barrier to harmful radiation.
Polarizing Lenses: Vision can be uncomfortable when light reflecting from shiny surfaces is directed into the eye. Glare is simply unwanted light that disturbs natural, comfortable vision. A polarizing lens will make reflected light disappear, which makes it ideal for fishing, boating or other outdoor activities.
Photochromic, Transition and Sunsensor Lenses: These lenses are ideal for multi purpose indoor or outdoor activities without the need to change eyeglasses. They change from a lite indoor tint to a darker outdoor tint. The specific properties of these lenses depend on their specific manufacturer. Allow our opticians to guide you to the proper lens to fit your life style.
Tints produce a softening effect, making lenses cosmetically flattering. But tinting has practical applications as well. For example, patients who are particularly light-sensitive, patients who spend hours at monochrome VDT, or for outdoor sport enthusiasts.
